FAQ
What happens when the AI can't answer a question?
When the AI can't answer, it tells the visitor so and asks for their name and email so you can follow up. It sends a handoff notification to your dashboard and inbox so you can jump in — the same as any other conversation.
Can I take over a conversation the AI is handling?
Yes. The AI answers every new chat 24/7, even when you're online. Reply in any chat, or click Take over, and it steps back right away.
Where do AI conversations go? Is this still privacy-first?
Yes. When the AI assistant is enabled, visitor messages, recent conversation history, and your site's FAQ content are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate replies — nothing else, and Anthropic doesn't use any of it to train its models. You can turn the assistant off per site at any time — sites with it off never send anything to Anthropic. The widget still sets zero cookies and does zero tracking either way. Does the AI have usage limits?
Yes, and they're there so spam can't run up your bill. The AI only answers on your own domain, so a copied widget can't spend your money. You set a spending limit for each billing period ($20 by default; raise it, lower it or switch it off), and it resets when your plan renews. Each visitor gets at most 3 AI conversations per site per day, and visitors on many VPNs, corporate virtual desktops and cloud networks get your email form instead of the AI unless you switch that on. One chat gets at most 12 AI replies in 24 hours before it comes to you, and each site gets at most 500 AI replies a day. Whenever a limit stops the AI, your chat keeps working: visitors still reach you — connected with you live when you're available, or leaving their name and email when you're away. Dashboard test replies (50 a month) and Generate-with-AI runs (5 a month) are free and never billed.
Does the AI chatbot work on WordPress, Shopify, or WooCommerce?
Yes. The AI chatbot works anywhere the GhostChat widget runs — WordPress (via the official plugin), WooCommerce, Shopify, React, Next.js, or a plain HTML site. Add the widget, switch the AI on in your dashboard, and it answers visitors on that site. It isn't available on plans billed through Shopify. WooCommerce stores can also feed live cart and product context into the chat.
How much does the AI chatbot cost?
It's billed per AI conversation, on top of Starter ($5/mo) or Team ($25/mo). You pay $0.10 once the AI gives a real answer. If it hands off before answering anything, it's free. A conversation counts once, never per message, even if your team takes it over later; a visitor who comes back after 24 hours of silence starts a new one. Nothing else to buy and no credit packs. You set a spending limit for each billing period ($20 by default, or none): You set the limit. We never charge a cent over it. Lowering it doesn't refund chats the AI already answered. AI conversations are added to your plan's invoice, and coupons don't apply to them. Every site on your account gets its own knowledge base (25 Q&As per site on Starter, 50 on Team). The Free plan doesn't include the assistant.
